Canvas
A strong fabric (usually cotton or linen) stretched over a wooden frame, used as a surface for painting.
Palette
A board on which an artist mixes paints, or the range of colours used in a particular painting or by an artist.
Composition
The arrangement of visual elements in a work of art - how shapes, colours, and objects are placed to create a balanced image.
Perspective
A technique for creating the illusion of depth on a flat surface, making objects appear to recede into the distance.
Abstract
Art that does not attempt to represent reality. Uses shapes, colours, and forms to create compositions independent of real-world references.
Realism
An art movement that aims to represent subjects as they appear in everyday life, without embellishment or interpretation.
Impressionism
A 19th-century art movement focused on capturing light and colour in the moment, using visible brushstrokes and pure colours.
Sculpture
Three-dimensional art created by carving, modelling, casting, or assembling materials like stone, metal, clay, or wood.
Gallery
A room or building for displaying works of art. Also refers to a business that sells artworks to collectors.
Fresco
A technique of painting on wet plaster so the colours become part of the wall itself. Used by Michelangelo on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
